Day Three - July 2 - Out and About

We decided to fit in as much sightseeing as possible, as it was our last full day in Vancouver. After the beautiful weather of the last two days, it was a bit rainy, but only for short showers during the day.

Waiting for the #22 bus, which goes downtown. Fooling around.
Got thirsty and stopped at McDs. Notice the maple leaf in the M. Sorry to say, everywhere except McDonald's had soda that tasted flat. What's up with that?
In the center of downtown is the Vancouver Art Gallery, which had an Andy Warhol exhibit showing, so off we went. Click on the image at right to enlarge.
Outside the gallery. Took bus to Stanley Park again, to Coal Harbour.

We walked to a hole-in-the-wall place for a snack called Fritz European Fryhouse (718 Davie) to see what the big deal was about these Euro-fries, since it was noted in our Vancouver for Dummies book. Kate had poutine, which are French fries covered with gravy and curds. Pam was less adventurous and tried the cajun-ketchup dip. Apparently Canadians like varieties of mayo with fries (gag). We took the downtown bus to Stanley Park to take a horse-drawn tour of this enormous area.

The horse-drawn carriage tour of Stanley Park. We had a little wait before it started so out came the camera again.

Can't say enough about this tour; the guide's narration was great; she (and Todd and Silver, our horses) were quite excellent. It got a little chilly in the wooded section of the park, but we were provided blankets for snuggling along the way. It was very relaxing to hear the clop-clop of the horses as we went along.

The bay where the many cruise ships come in for passengers. This was supposed to be a mermaid statue, but the artist ended up doing "The Wet Suit Girl".
The carriage briefly stopped so we could take pictures of the totem poles.

We walked around a lot after being dropped off by the bus back in the West End, and grabbed dinner at Gigi's Pizza & Spaghetti House (1047 Davie St.). Salmon was good, steak ok. Conversation was excellent. The waitress/manager chatted us up and we told her that we just got married. She was excited and saddened -- "Your country is so backward". She just couldn't understand what the big deal was. Sadly, we had to agree. We picked up a local real estate circular because we are always curious about what it costs to live in the places we visit. Boy Vancouver is off the charts, especially if you want a pad in the West End.

We wanted to ride the ferry back toward the B&B to grab some pictures before turning in, so we hustled to a bus that took us over to Granville Island where we could catch the Aquabus. We intended to take this to the Science World stop, but it unfortunately stops running at 6PM, so the boat captain left us at another stop, which was about a 20 minute walk to Science World. By the time we walked all the way there, we realized that it was only about 7 blocks from the B&B.

By the time we got home it was nearly 10, so we packed up our things and got ready for the journey home. Sara had ordered a cab to the airport for us (5AM Pacific time) and prepared a bag breakfast for us to take, so all we had to do was set the alarm, go to sleep and get up in time to go to the airport. Customs was a breeze and we were back home around 8:30 PM EDT.
